National Clean Air Day: Healthcare Ventilation...
During National Clean Air Day, we naturally think about the outdoors, fresh air, and clear skies. But in...
The Stanbridge Story. Every great company has a story. Ours just happens to begin with bicycles and end up helping hospitals, care homes, and healthcare professionals provide safer, more dignified care. Back in the early days, C.A.W. Stanbridge was a bicycle supplier and engineering company.
Like many successful businesses, it had a knack for spotting opportunities. During the 1930s, while much of the country was getting around on two wheels, Stanbridge turned its engineering talents towards accurate weighing scales. These innovative products took the guesswork out of selling goods by weight and helped healthcare professionals determine a person’s weight with far greater accuracy.
Then came 5 July 1948 and the birth of the NHS. As Britain embraced healthcare “from the cradle to the grave,” hospitals and care facilities needed better equipment than ever before. Stanbridge saw the opportunity and, by 1950, was manufacturing commode bucket washer-disinfectors. Let’s be honest—it’s not the most glamorous product in the world. Nobody hangs a washer-disinfector on the living room wall. But when it comes to infection prevention and hygiene, these machines performed an essential job and quickly became a valued part of healthcare environments. Working from modest premises in New Cross, South London, Stanbridge secured its first major order from Brighton General Hospital and its network of 50 nursing homes. It was the start of a long and successful relationship with the healthcare sector.
As the company grew, supplying, servicing, and maintaining equipment became the heart of the business. In 1956, John Beaumont took the reins and C.A.W. Stanbridge became Stanbridge Limited. Fortunately for the company, John was not the sort of person who liked standing still. A natural entrepreneur with a talent for spotting new opportunities, he helped steer Stanbridge through years of expansion. The company moved to larger premises in Pope Road, Bromley, and later, in 1980, to an even bigger site on Horsley Road.
John also recognised that healthcare wasn’t just about clinical equipment—it was about improving quality of life. When he saw the challenges faced by people with limited mobility, he introduced reclining baths to the Stanbridge product range. Suddenly, bathing could be safer, more comfortable, and considerably less stressful for both residents and carers.
Of course, manufacturing large bathing equipment takes up a lot more room than weighing scales and washer-disinfectors. Before long, Stanbridge needed another move, this time to larger premises in St Mary Cray.
The extra space allowed the company to continue expanding and diversifying. Steri Products joined the family, bringing specialist sterilisation equipment for hospitals and dental practices. The company that had once sold bicycles was now helping healthcare providers tackle everything from infection control to assisted bathing.
In 2018, Stanbridge Limited made the strategic decision to focus on what it did best and ceased manufacturing assisted bathing equipment. By concentrating its expertise on infection prevention and decontamination solutions, the company strengthened its position as a trusted partner to hospitals, care homes, and healthcare providers.
As the business continued to evolve, Stanbridge relocated to modern premises just outside Dartford. Combining contemporary office space with a dedicated factory facility overlooking a lake, the new site provided an ideal environment for the company’s next chapter of growth. Its excellent connectivity to the motorway network also ensured efficient access for customers, service engineers, and distribution throughout the UK.
Today, Stanbridge’s expertise extends far beyond the supply of equipment. The company provides specialist advice, installation, servicing, and maintenance for modern sluice rooms, helping healthcare facilities remain compliant with continually evolving regulations and best-practice standards. Through training courses, seminars, and practical support, Stanbridge assists those involved in infection prevention and the safe management and disposal of human bodily fluids, ensuring that staff have the knowledge and confidence to maintain the highest standards of hygiene and patient care.
