The management of human waste in healthcare settings is more than just a routine task; it’s crucial in preventing the spread of infection. Correct disposal ensures both staff and patients are kept safe.
Human waste, also known as ‘offensive waste’, includes human bodily fluids collected in bedpans and urine bottles. All human waste must be treated as infectious to prevent the spread of any bacteria.
One of the safest ways to dispose of human waste is via a sluice room using a bedpan washer disinfector. This method allows staff to dispose of patients’ bodily fluids in a dedicated sluice room with equipment that can wash and disinfect utensils.
This is done by placing all dirty utensils i.e. bedpans and urine bottles, into the bedpan washer disinfector machine. They are then washed and disinfected, ensuring all bacteria has been decontaminated, ready for the utensils to be reused.
