Working as a team to fight infections

Infection prevention and control is a team sport, working together to fight infections and stop the spread of HCAI’s is essential. Even with strong protocols in place, everyday touch points can be missed, and that is where infections find the opportunity to spread.

Common high-touch surfaces in hospitals and care homes include:

  • Bed rails and overbed tables
  • Call buttons and remote controls
  • Door handles and light switches
  • Tables, bannisters & handrails
  • IV pumps and monitor controls
  • Workstations on wheels, keyboards, and touchscreens

These touch points can act as “reservoirs” (find out more about the chain of infection here) for pathogens, because they are touched frequently throughout the day. Some pathogens that are often linked to contaminated surfaces and can survive for extended periods of time include:

  • MRSA
  • C. diff
  • Norovirus

The challenge is that these organisms can transfer from a surface to hands or gloves, then hitch a ride on gowns, mobile devices, stethoscopes, or shared equipment. From there, they can spread to workstations, medication areas, and the next patient.

Practical ways to cut cross-contamination and break the chain of infection include:

1. Hand Washing

Hand hygiene isn’t just before and after patient contact; it is crucial after touching any part of the patient’s surroundings.

2. Clear Ownership

Prioritise frequent cleaning of high-touch point areas, and ensure there is clear ownership and checklists in place, to ensure all areas are covered.

3. Disinfection

Portable equipment should be disinfected not just between patients, but also between different rooms or wards to prevent any outbreaks from spreading.

Stopping the spread of infection isn’t the job of a single person or department; it’s a shared responsibility. By staying vigilant and focusing on the small, high-touch points, you can help create a safer environment for staff, patients and residents.
